there is / there are
We use there is / there are to say that something exists or is in a place.
is or are?
Use there is for one thing (singular) and there are for more than one (plural). Short form: there's for there is.
- •There is a cat on the chair.
- •There's a problem.
- •There are two windows in the room.
Negative and questions
Negative: there isn't / there aren't. Question: Is there ...? / Are there ...? We often use any in questions and negatives.
- •There isn't any milk.
- •Are there any shops near here?
- •Is there a bank on this street?
