Prepositions of place: in / on / under / next to

Prepositions of place tell us where something is.

in, on, under

Use in for inside something, on for a surface (on top of), and under for below something.

  • The keys are in the bag.
  • The book is on the table.
  • The cat is under the chair.

next to, between, behind, in front of

Use next to (= beside) for something near, between for the middle of two things, behind for the back, and in front of for the front.

  • The shop is next to the bank.
  • The car is in front of the house.
  • She sits between Tom and Anna.
