"would like" (polite requests)

"I would like" is a polite way to ask for something or say what you want. It is softer than "I want".

Form and short form

Use would like + a noun, or would like + to + verb. The short form is 'd like (I'd like, she'd like). It works the same for all people.

  • I would like a coffee.
  • I'd like to book a table.
  • She'd like some water.

Questions and offers

To offer something politely, ask Would you like ...? A common answer is Yes, please. or No, thank you.

  • Would you like a drink?
  • Would you like to sit here?
