Present Simple: he / she / it (-s)
With he, she, and it in the Present Simple, we add -s (or -es) to the verb.
Add -s for he/she/it
When the subject is he, she, or it (one person or thing), add -s to the verb. This is a frequent mistake for Russian speakers, because Russian changes verbs differently.
- •He works in a bank.
- •She gets up at seven.
- •It rains in autumn.
Spelling: -es and -ies
Add -es after o, s, sh, ch, x (go -> goes, watch -> watches). If the verb ends in consonant + y, change y to ies (study -> studies). Note: have -> has.
- •She goes to school.
- •He watches TV.
- •My sister studies medicine.
Negative and questions with does
For he/she/it, use does not (doesn't) and Does ...? Important: after does/doesn't the verb has NO -s.
- •She doesn't eat meat.
- •Does he live here?
- •What does it mean?
