Learning to Surf

Maya had always wanted to learn to surf, but she was nervous about the ocean. Last summer, she finally decided to book lessons with a local instructor named Tom. On her first day, Tom explained that surfing requires patience and practice. He showed her how to lie on the board and paddle, and how to pop up quickly when a wave comes. The water was cold at first, and Maya fell many times. She felt frustrated, but Tom encouraged her to keep trying. After two weeks of lessons, something changed. Maya caught a small wave and rode it all the way to the shore. Her heart was racing with excitement. She had done it! Although she still had much to learn, Maya now understood why people love surfing so much. The ocean, which had seemed scary before, now felt like a place where she belonged. She booked more lessons and promised herself she would return every weekend.
