Sarah had been looking forward to her weekend trip to Paris for months. She arrived at Lyon train station with plenty of time to spare, clutching her phone and a worn paper ticket. The departure board flickered with dozens of destinations, and she quickly located the 14:35 service. Without checking the platform number twice, she hurried through the busy station and boarded the train that was waiting there.
As the train pulled away, Sarah settled into her seat with a satisfied sigh, opened her book, and watched the French countryside roll past. An hour into the journey, she decided to check her ticket more carefully. Her heart sank. The ticket clearly stated platform 7, but she had boarded from platform 9. Worse still, she realised she was on a train heading to Marseille, not Paris.
Sarah immediately flagged down a conductor, who explained that she would have to get off at the next major station and catch a connecting train back to Lyon, then take the correct service to Paris. The detour would cost her nearly four hours and an additional €45. Frustrated and embarrassed, she gathered her belongings.
At Valence station, Sarah made the return journey in silence, mentally replaying the moment she had rushed through the station without proper attention. When she finally arrived in Paris that evening—much later than planned—she had missed her dinner reservation and felt utterly exhausted.
The following morning, however, Sarah found herself smiling. Her mistake had forced her to see more of the French landscape than she had anticipated, and she had learned a valuable lesson about patience and careful planning. Sometimes, she thought, the best journeys are the ones that don't go exactly as planned.
