Sarah had been wandering through Barcelona's Gothic Quarter for barely an hour when she heard someone call her name. At first, she thought she'd imagined it. The voice came again, louder this time, and she turned to see a tall man hurrying towards her through the crowded plaza.
It took her a moment to recognize him. "Marcus? Is that really you?" she gasped, her mind racing back through the years.
"I can't believe it's actually you!" he laughed, pulling her into a warm embrace. "What are the odds? I'm here for a conference, staying for another week."
They had met at university over twelve years ago, bonded through late-night study sessions and shared dreams of travelling the world. After graduation, life had pulled them in different directions. Marcus had moved to Berlin for work, while Sarah had taken a job in London. They'd exchanged emails sporadically for a few years, but gradually lost touch as careers and relationships consumed their attention.
Over coffee at a nearby café, they caught up on the missing years. Marcus had eventually left his corporate job to start his own tech company. Sarah had recently quit her marketing position, deciding to take a sabbatical and explore Europe—something they'd always discussed as students. They laughed about old friends, reminisced about university mishaps, and marvelled at how much they'd both changed yet remained fundamentally the same.
As the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the plaza, Marcus invited her to join him and his colleagues for dinner that evening. Sarah hesitated only briefly before accepting. Sometimes, she thought, the best travel memories weren't the monuments you saw, but the unexpected connections you rediscovered along the way.
